Tips for Transfer Students

As a transfer student attending EIU for the first time fall semester 2009 you will have many exciting new opportunities awaiting you.
Take full advantage of the many resources available to you on campus. Doing so will help you accomplish your goals and realize your dreams.

For those of you coming in as juniors, attending the fall Career Fair on September 23 is a must. Advance preparation will increase your confidence as you network with employers. Career Services will be offering workshops on resume writing, interview skills, mock interviews, and many more during the first few weeks of class. The first Saturday in the semester you can take advantage of one of the best deals on campus by attending the Career Bootcamp offered by Career Services. The charge for attending is minimal, and you get a lot of "bang for your buck". This event will help you prepare for Career Fair and for your search for that summer internship.

Get involved! Join a business student organization. Each major has at least one student organization geared specifically toward students within the major. Some examples: Beta Alpha Psi for accounting majors, Financial Management Association for finance majors, Association of Information Technology Professionals for MIS majors, the American Marketing Association for marketing majors, and the Society of Human Resourse Management for management majors. There are others, but I won't take the time or space here to mention them. Joining one of these organizations will help you meet others with common interests, and make friends. Another option is the Student Ambassador group. If you have a minimum g.p.a. of 3.0 and the desire to get involved this may be the group for you. To learn more about it, and pick up an application stop by the Student Center in Lumpkin Hall.

The faculty and staff at EIU are here to help you. Get to know your professors. Stop by to see them during office hours. Get to know your advisors. You don't have to wait until preregistration advising to meet your advisor. Stop by the Student Center and get to know the staff. We are here to help you achieve your goals academically and professionally.
